From our research, we have found that there are more than 100,000 petro-chemicals used in personal care products alone and thousands more in our household cleaning products. You might wonder… “what’s so bad about petro-chemicals?”
From mineral oil to harmful plastic bottles, they are synthesized from crude oil. The problem is that, in the human body, a petro-chemical mimics estrogen, but since it is not a natural estrogen made by your body, it causes many health problems.
These chemicals have been labeled hormone disruptors. As such, they affect how estrogen & progesterone function in the body by blocking them or mimicking them.
Because they are synthetic, they disrupt the body’s natural hormone production & balance. These synthetic estrogens can make hormone-receptor-positive breast cancer develop and grow. Informed women, therefore, choose to limit their exposure to these chemicals. More, here.
One of the most insidious, and at the top of my personal blacklist, are the plugins that claim to “Add lasting and continuous fragrance to your living room, bedroom, busy bathroom, kitchen and other rooms“.
Oh my goodness!! Think about it, the entire time you are in a room with a “plugin“, you are breathing synthetic estrogens!!! Is it any wonder that breast cancer is the second most common cancer in women, after skin cancer, and about 1 in 8 women in the U.S. alone, (12%) will develop invasive breast cancer over the course of their lifetime.
In addition to those “insidious plugins“, we need to avoid personal care products that contain petro-chemicals. This includes cosmetics, perfumes, lotions, moisturizers, hair spray, etc… I think you get the idea.
Suffice it to say, if it touches your skin, or, if you breathe it in, please, please make certain the label clearly states “petro-chemical free”.
Another source of synthetic estrogens are found in commercially grown meat, poultry & dairy. An important part of your lifestyle must include must include “grass fed, hormone-free, antibiotic-free, pesticide-free” meat & dairy. You may wonder, is the expense of higher quality animal products worth it? Many have chosen to eat smaller amounts of protein at each meal (the average person only can assimilate approximately 100 grams at a time, that’s 3.5-4oz!). Also, eating more plant proteins such as beans and legumes in place of meat is another great way to fulfill your body’s protein needs. Simply cutting out this one source of synthetic estrogenic hormones has supported women & men’s health goals in a very short amount of time.
Additionally, all mass produced, factory farmed animals have a very, very high carbon footprint on the environment, while farmed fish are exposed to many dangerous chemicals that have a very negative impact on the environment and our health. Cutting out ALL factory farmed land animals and seafood, while minimizing the quantity of responsibly raised animals, will have a large impact on your health, your wallet and the planet.
While these suggestions are an excellent start, you are probably wondering, “Wherever am I going to find all plant-based, petro-chemical free personal care products and household cleaning products”.
In the next section, we share the meaningful results of our research…
